While Hondas and Toyotas have great reps for reliability they still have stuff that breaks, wears out and their parts are anything but cheap. Like any car, they are fine when they are new, but you still have to maintain them. And they do have stuff go wrong. The best thing about these makes is the manufacturers generally seem to take better care of customers than domestic or Euro car makers.
IMHO, you also have to be willing to put up with the overall bland appliance-like feeling of these cars. They are meant to appeal to a broad market of people who look at cars only as transportation. Nothing wrong with that, but it means cars with more isolation from the road and a basic inability (at least in stock form) to cope with any spirited driving and make it enjoyable. If you don't care about that, a Yota or Honda may be fine.
But look at the things you give up when you make the switch. Seat quality/comfort, safety, steering feel, ride and handling, TCS and ESP. These things can be subjective, but over time can make a real difference. Having done the same 4 to 8-hour drives in both Saabs and Toyotas, I know which one is the cheap seats.
The IDM backorder is a supplier fault, not a Saab fault. Stuff happens.
