Sometimes the odomenter/spedometer unit is defective and gets replaced. Some manufacturers like VW just put in a new unit starting at zero again and put a sticker in the door jamb that advised at what mileage the odo was changed out.
When I was with Saturn the replacement odo was requested from Saturn with the new units mileage set to the current mileage so there was no funny stuff resulting from the change.
Dunno' how Saab or BMW motorcycles does it.....
