3M headlight lens film

Hello 9-5 board, I'm new here, because a lady friend has purchased an '04 Arc Wagon, and I've offered to help her with the car. I've been a Saab 9000 owner since 1992, so Saabs and Saabnet are not new to me, but the 9-5 is.
I'm writing today to see how to address frosted headlight lenses on her car.
I did a search on the board regarding frosted headlight lens, and it looks to me like polishing the plastic down to clear material may be the way to go.
I have two concerns;
1) Someone on this board posted that the lens has a UV protection on it that will be removed with sanding/polishing and without that protection the lens will frost again in no time.
2) Thinking that a film on the lens might help provide UV protection, I did an internet search for a clear plastic film to put on the lens after I got it polished back to clear. I stumbled across a post on another board that said the film keeps heat from dissipating and causes the frosting to come happen again.
The frosting is pretty bad along the top of the lens, and really does need attention.
So what do you guys think?
Should I leave the frosting alone, or polish the lens and omit the film, or polish it then add the film.
Also if film is what you recommend, does the thicknes of the film make a difference.
Thanks,
Ed
