Thanks SWEDECAR--
This "ready" test--how long does the car have "to be driven in a certain manner until the fuel computer has tested and declared all emission related devices up and running correctly" before you can take it in?
Sometimes the CEL comes back on for me in a few days, sometimes in as little as 15-50 miles. It just depends.
Perhaps this "ready" test has come along in the last couple of years? 2 years ago I passed smog by disconnecting the battery before the test but I don't remember how long I drove it before taking it in. Maybe that time I put 30 miles on it or so before taking it in -- this time I pulled fuse 17 and put it back and drove it right in immediately -- which apparently wasn't a good strategy.
All I know about the problem is that a Rear O2 sensor is reporting a problem when there isn't one. So the first step of every shop is to replace the O2 -- which I've done many times without success -- so am unwilling to do that again. Unfortunately that's the least-expensive step as well as I understand it. From there you spend real money which is hard to do since not one of the 3 shops I've taken it to so far can pinpoint the problem.
