Todd,
I've done both inner CV joints on my '01 Aero in the last few months, so here's a few thoughts for you:
First, on both, the metal ring that holds the joint in the driver cup: It's used only for OE installs, so it can be bent/cut/removed.
The LH side's a pain to do the inner boot on, as if you pull the cup with the axle assembly, you'll need to refill the gearbox oil (get ready to catch it) and replace the seal for same. I chose not to do that, instead cutting the metal ring and pulling out the axle. For whatever reason, the OE LH boot I bought didn't fit, so I used a generic one-piece boot from my fave auto parts place (I did measure so the new one fit properly).
The other challenge you'll find if you do it the way I did (leaving the inner driver cup in the gearbox) is that it's darned near impossible to get the usual crimp clamping on the boot. I ended up using hose clamps (3.5-4" on the joint side of the boot, normal clamp on the axle side) rather than the crimp clamps.
The RH inner boot is waaay easier because one pulls the axle out of the intermediate driveshaft.
