I think the catalytic converter replacement was more precautionary because they said they've seen problems with the converters on other DI failures in the past. I didn't push for an exact answer because it was all warrantied. I know it was the most expensive part by far though.
The wastegate was jammed and wouldn't do its job. They think the spring must have failed, maybe tempered from overheating. At first they thought it was the turbo bypass valve due to the characteristics of the power problem. I was standing next to my car while they probed for answers so I wouldn't miss the "eureka" moment and they were very surprised at the failed wastegate. They told me they had never seen that happen before.
I sold my '88 900 Turbo w/220K miles (all put on by me) last year so I HAD to be involved in the investigation.
