John is correct. Soldering does provide good electrical and poor mechanical connections. But, there is more.......
In any circuit where the current flow is significant, heat is generated and dissipated by the copper wiring and everything else in the circuit....including the solder joints. Solder melts at a fairly low temperature (361°F). As a result, it softens and crystallizes, and becomes a high-resistance junction……and the lights go out.
Resoldering solves the problem for a while. Saab’s choice of a relay using soldered joints was a poor one. Throughout contemporary automobiles crimped, not soldered, joints are used with very good results. The good news is that starting in 2006 the orange relay is gone from the 9-5……along with the solder joint problems.
Mechanical vibration and the low temperature characteristics of solder make it a poor choice for electrical connections, especially where current flow is high, excepting, where current flow is very low and mechanical vibration is non-existent, such as printed circuit boards.
