The reason why your exhaust got louder when the wastegate was wide open is because the exhaust was bypassing the turbo blades. The turbo blades are what quiets the exhaust noise since they literally "chop up" the sound waves (in laymans terms... I don't know the technical terms behind the acoustics)
Several people here have tried putting a sport exhaust on a normally aspirated Saab (because it fits fine) but it definitely doesn't SOUND good! On the other hand, I once blew out the muffler right after the catalytic converter on my turbo and the sound wasn't really that objectionable! ;-)
