I am losing antifreeze it appears from the coolant tank cap daily. I recently blew an upper hose I believe because I was low on antifreeze (SID is crap couldn't tell what it was trying to tell as warning).. didn't know till it was too late.. after driving over 300 miles round trip to get hoses and parts (no aftermarket hoses available for Saab in stock anywhere and also found terribly rotten intercooler hose with huge hole while investigating coolant leak).. changed upper hose and $95 intercooler hose!~! and while I was in there changed t-stat with factory $20+ t-stat.. all went well and tested and no leaks anywhere.. also nice smooth idle now that turbo keeps pressure from new hose.. few days and about hundred miles later the familiar ding and now I knew what the scrambled SID message said. low coolant again.. checked it out while running and antifreeze on battery cover and hood above cap but nothing leaking and no signs of leaks anywhere else. opened cap and had very much pressure and level rose almost fo cold fill mark.. filled it up and ran it again and tried to see where leak was and nothing spewed out after idling for 10-15 minutes hot.. fan was cycling on and off.. let cool down and took cap apart and the check/pressure valves seem OK and not sticking. also didn't notice bubbles or oil in tank that I read to look for from other similar coolant loss posts which indicated possible head gasket failure causing exccessive pressure into cooling system.. no white smoke from tailpipe but perhaps may be still be headgasket? Hope not.. Now need to top it off every day after 50 mile commute maybe 1/2 quart with coolant warning letting me know when low.. every time I pull off cap to fill there seems to be very much pressure and coolant level in tank rises.. so cap is holding in quite a bit of pressure, but maybe still not enough? do these caps fail in this way?? since I changed hose and t-stats (and blower motor and and and) has not over heated and have good heat (on passenger side only, code 8) and I can tell the t-stat opens as after maybe 5-10 min driving in very cold temps (Maine) the temp guage runs up to the 9 o clock mark and then when t-stat opens drops to 6-7 ish before climbing back to 9 position where it stays pinned after.
sorry for long post, just not sure if could be as simple as maybe failed coolant tank cap and if should test or just get new cap? 174,000 miles I assume original cap.. probably cost more to ship one to me then the cap itself with no dealers in this area!
One last note, was going to change bottom coolant hose while I was at it as figured was time to change, but could not see easy way to get at it from above or below are there any tricks or do have to take the turbo assembly apart to get to it or from the bottom? Also figure will change lower intercooler hose soon as upper one was rotten badly as I assume that one as well as other coolant hoses are due for changing.. I also noticed vacuum hoses deterioratign badly.. good spring warm weather projects..
Thanks in advance..
