...an oil pump failure. Or more specifically, the timing cover that is integral in oil pump operation.
Quite possibly a bit of grit got drawn through the oil pump and scored the timing cover on its way through. This creates a vacuum leak and effectively prevents the pump from pulling oil through, resulting in loss of oil pressure and subsequent oil starvation.
I especially feel that way because you had what seemed like a sudden onset of the problem rather than a pattern of flickering oil light at idle or startup, which I might expect to see in a classic case of sludge-induced starvation.
Either way, since you weren't able to immediately shut the engine down, likely the fatal damage has been done. I'd say it's even more likely since you've had previous sludge experience, and during the previous sludge issue there was probably some amount of damage already done.
Never know, though. You might dodge a bullet since you didn't continue to drive for a tremendously long time.
