I will answer my own question. I found a diagram online that shows what the inside of the OnStar Switch looks like...

this guy is doing some interesting work with the SID and building his own handsfree system. Makes for interesting reading.
What I found out is that inside the OnStar switch there are 3 soft switches of the membrane type and when you push them different resistors are selected to modify the signal going back to the OnStar unit. There are also several LEDs.
I am happy I waited to find more information before getting into this switch. I need a conventional single pole single throw switch with a momentary contact for this transmitter, and that is not how the OnStar switch is set up.
I guess I will need to use something like the rear fog light switch. I want the switch to be very integrated into the Saab dash like an OEM switch.
