Toyo Proxes 4 - not so good in snow?

2003 Arc wagon, 60k. Proxes 4 have 25k, and are rotated every 5k.
I am curious to know if others are running the Proxes 4 in the winter and, if so, how has your experience been? Mine has been not so good.
These are M+S tires but I'm finding them to be sorely lacking on the "S." My car feels very un-SAABy in the snow -- sliding everywhere, struggling to get up hills and stop going down hills. I've tried some things to compensate, like switching off the ESP for better feel or driving in manual trans. mode so that I can paddle-shift my way to better controlling the power delivery. Still not so good.
Having run snows in the past (Gislaveds on a OG9-3, Hakkas on a Volvo 850) I do know those are the best way to go. But right now I am trying to avoid the expense.
So, anyone having good luck with Proxes 4 in the snow?
