"Where it matters" (i.e., in the bearings) there is but a 3% difference in viscosity between M1 0W40 and Castrol 0W30. Both oils seem to be right on the edge between 30 and 40 weight, the Castrol on the light side of the line, the Mobil 1 on the heavy side.
Castrol 5W40 (and many other oils of that grade) are more firmly centered in the 40 weight range of viscosity. Because the 9-5 4 cylinder engine runs at relatively high oil temperature (to help with the sludge issue), I'd prefer an oil in the heavier range. But for the V-6 engine or the 9-3SS, the heavier oil isn't necessary.
