Bob-
Get the vehicle running again off the jump leads. Before disconnecting confirm there is about 13-14 volts on the dead vehicles battery. Disconnect the leads and check the voltage again if it has been reduced to 12 volts or less when the vehicle is running, your alternator is not working. Check the connections on the backside of the alternator to be sure they are tight and clean of corrosion.
Remove the battery from the vehicle, or disconnect both terminals and put on a charger overnight. See if the vehicle starts and runs and check voltage at this time.
If the battery does not hold a charge, it may be bad. A slowly dieing alternator can cause this over time. Hope you have a warranty for the alt, since from your description, it sounds dead.
