Apologize in advance for the length. Best to know back story I guess...
I've had my 01 9-5 4cyl for 3 years currently has 100k. My reverse gear slowly started to get more and more temperamental and peaked this winter. It wouldn't engage unless I could somehow manage to rock the car so it could move backward enough to slip in into gear... I estimate it to be common issue with the 9-5 manuals of the early 2000's as I've researched it and found a number of posts on this forum and others. I just got a new job after being laid off and out of work for 5 months... So I bit the bullet and I'm getting the new reverse gear. I'm having it done at the dealer. I'm not a dealer exclusive person - tend to use them for occasional oil changes to get a courtesy diagnostic. I like to think I've had great luck with this car - but things have manifested over time (like the reverse gear) and the dealer is estimated $5,800 to get it all squared away. A shopping list of things to do (I've posted below message).
So... getting to the whole part of the post. After the diagnostic, it was, in fact, the reverse gear. Part of the shopping list, a major expenditure, is the new clutch. In my opinion, the clutch has worked fine. I have had no issues getting it into any other gear and the hydraulics on the pedal seem fine. He did mention the major chunk of labor is done for the clutch replacement - so I'm "saving" in that respect. But it's a big fix, I'm wondering - should I do JUST the reverse gear and save the clutch for when it feels bad, or do it all right now? Or, do the reverse gear and bring it to my local garage for everything else?
