Car alarm went off — car battery dead

This morning when I wanted to drive to work, nothing happened when I turned the ignition key. In fact the battery was VERY flat (faint light in the instruments and although I could open the door locks with the remote control I could only lock the car again by manually locking each door with the key).
My neighbour then appeared and told me that the car alarm had gone off at about 5.45 in the morning and kept on for a long time, 10-15 minutes or so (apparently he is a lighter sleeper than my wife and I).
Isn't this a bit strange?
First of all, I thought that a car alarm was only allowed to make noise for 30-40 seconds, so continuing for 10-15 minutes would seem to be a malfunction in itself.
Secondly, I've never seen a battery so flat that the central locking will work once, but not twice.
Can a malfunctioning alarm drain the battery completely? Or can a really flat battery cause the alarm to go off?
Isn't it odd for a battery (although 3 years old) to start the car without the slightest problem on the Saturday and then be completely drained on the Monday morning?
Thank you in advance for any input!
