Heat shrink tubing is slipped over the wire (the wire would have to be cut first, and then soldered back together), heated with a flame, and it then literally shrinks to a tight fit. Great for moisture-proofing but I'm not sure how tough or flexible it is after it's heat treated. You can find it in various sizes at most any auto parts store or electrical supply stores.
I don't solder and I'm too cheap to buy the entire harness without a fight, so for what it's worth, here's what I did:
1. Removed the trunk liner material to gain access to the wiring to the latch and taillights. This gave me a nice accessible location to make a 4-5" splice in each of the 4 wires using solderless crimp connectors.
2. This gave me more wire to work with and allowed me to pull the broken ends of the wires farther out from the trunk lid so that they too could be easily spliced together, once again using solderless connectors. I wrapped the connectors with electrical tape.
3. I finished off by going back to the stressed location where the breaks always occur and wrapped the good wire with a couple layers of electrical tape. Another possible protection might be to insert the wires in a short length of pliable plastic tubing or rubber hose before you splice them together again.
