Solenoids are fairly sturdy items and it is very rare that they fail.
This was the first time I replaced an SL solenoid and I have only replaced one S1 solenoid before that many years ago.
It is usually other problems with the transmissions than a clear cut failed solenoid. Like the double shift engagement on 2002 and up 9-5 transmissions like many Volvo's from 2000 and up using the 5 speed auto.
That problem takes a new valve body but is so expensive to fix that it is not really worth it since the double engage problem doesn't seem to escalate into something bad.
Changing transmission fluid on a regular basis (every 30K miles) helps a lot in keeping the transmission clutches and seals stay healthy.
