Your math is fine, but as far as the new car being as big or bigger than the 9-5 - I think this extremely unlikely.
The max width of the first 9-5 sedan (I don't know about the 2002 model) is 70.6 inches (body) and 80.4 inches (outside of mirror to outside of opposite mirror). The length of the sedan is 189.2 inches. This is from a tech sheet I found somewhere..... If that width for the new 9-3 is it's maximum width, then it is still about 8.5 inches narrower than the 9-5.
While the new 9-3 is possibly going to be longer for crash safety reasons, and styling (a sedan for the first time), it makes no sense to make it a clone of the 9-5 in dimensions. I'm sure it will be narrower, like an Audi A4 compared to an A6 - about a 90% size disparity.
The weight increase is reasonable. All cars are getting porkier. The consumer wants better NVH and standard features. That all costs in added mass. You can bet the next generation 9-5 will be heavier than the current car, especially the AWD variant.
This is all my own reasoning. I don't have any hard data. Until Saab releases detailed info, it is a lot of conjecture.
