9-5 vs 9000 air box modification

A while back I modified the air box on my 1994 9000 Aero; I was very much pleased with the improvement in performance as a result of removing the restrictive elephant trunk, drilling a few holes in the outer side of the air box and installing a K&N air filter.
Recently I decided to take a look at the air box set up in my wife's 2000 9-5 LPT with the Saab ECU upgrade (200 hp). I noted that while the intake area above the air filter was 3 1/2 inches in diameter, the air box is fed by a 2 1/2 inch intake hose coming from the front grill area. When this intake hose starts to make a bend, its size is further reduced to an oblong shape which is 2 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches (essentially very much like the elephant trunk intake hose that was originally on my 1994 9000 Aero).
My question is, given the different Trionic system on the 9-5, would there be a benefit to attempting to modify the air box (drilling an additional hole). Since the elephant trunk like intake hose brings in cool air from the front of the engine area, I would leave this hose in place, and merely drill another intake hole in the air box. What I don't know is what effect would this have given the T-7 trionic system on the newer 9-5 cars versus what is on the 9000 cars.
Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be welcome.
