I feel good today!!!!
My teeth are whiter, there's a bounce in my step, the ladies at work couldn't resist me, my car doesn't vibrate, I lost five pounds and did I mention the car is dead quiet to boot! YESSSSSSSS!!! The car is dead quiet and vibration free. AND! The best part is I did all the work myself and the whole job cost under $250.
I did the under battery transmission mount the other week and it took the vibrations down by 90%. I did the yoke mount today and it took vibrations down by another 9% and made the car DEAD QUIET. DEAD QUIET in idle, DEAD QUIET under load. After I lowered the car and let it run while cleaning the tools I couldn't help to notice how quiet it was. When I hit the road and stomped on it the firewall was dead silent. At cruising speeds the only noise coming in is from the windows..but that may be the 30 pounds of sound deadening material I stuffed in the doors. Both mounts also cleared up "drivetrain slop" things are tighter, more responsive, better shifts, quicker throttle and a pulley whine has now mysteriously disappeared..... all this for $250??? This is the kind of stuff that puts a grin on your face.
I did the yoke mount in 30 minutes; start to finish. Easier than an oil change. I threw a jack under the pan, got my breaker bar out and got to work. The engine was hot so I had to use oven mitts to handle the hot metal parts.
My mount - it looks like a joystick - was sunken so that there was only 1/5" clearance visible. Further, it sagged backward, tilting the entire engine towards the firewall.
Also, I found out my engine block had an actual crack around the screw hole nearest to the driver. The old mount was so bad and tilted, that too much pressure was put on that bolt and it cracked. The crack (two of them) is isolated to the screw hole and I didn't panic (much) when I saw it. I re tightened the screws to normal specs. I may have gone 2-3 pounds over. Is it OK to be 2-3 pounds over on a 35 pound torque spec?
This was done on a 2003 9-5 Aero with 116K on the odo.
Here are some tips:
1- Do it.
2- You may need to jack the engine up by two-three inches; use soft wood
and center the jack under the oil pan.
3- When you put the new mount in you will notice that the screws don't catch because the engine was previously MUCH lower and if you supported it at that height there will be a gap between the yoke - now higher due to the higher mount clearance - and the block. You may need to jack the engine up further to shrink this gap and get the screws to meet the threads.
4- To get the job done, I rented a torque wrench and 24" breaker bar from Autozone.
In a world of $12 washers, $20 batteries and other crap this is well worth the $250 and the satisfaction of having it done yourself. The jobs are dead easy. The under battery walk through can be found on Planoffs site and the yoke is dead simple. If your car is close to 100K and you plan on keeping it longer get this done.
