In Europe, they use different specifications. 98 RON is equal to about 93 pump octane for the USA. Pump octane is the average of two octane tests, one being R(esearch)ON and the other being M(otor)ON. You can meet a given RON and have a lousy MON which is what Coolknight found with the BP 98RON. So pump octane is better specification since it effectively limits lousy motor octane. Poor motor octane usually occurs when a refinery has to use more of certain less stable components in the gasoline blends. This can happen when a part of the refinery is shut down for maintenance.
