Trust me, you can't put them in wrong. The holes are so different there is no way you can get them close if they're reversed, backwards, upside down, you name it. When I put mine on I tighten them until I see the bar starting to bend down a bit. Then I do two more cranks.
I drove up to NY with my kayak on the roof on Tuesday and didn't tighten them enough they made awful creaking sounds with every road imperfection. Two or three extra twists and they were almost silent. They wiggle a little in the holes but not too bad. As a word of warning, when you're taking them off by yourself, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put something between the loose end of the rack and the roof when you're pulling on the end still in holes. I don't want to talk about how that giant scratch got on my roof...
You're also going to want to find yourself a fairing if you don't have one already. Above 40mph those bars howl like you wouldn't believe.
