According to my SAAB dealers service manager here in L.A. (he's my neighbor), any major brand Semi-synthetic or Full-synthetic is fine (e.g. Saab, Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline, etc.) and will not void your warranty. For proper oil weight just go by what SAAB says in the owners manual.
Concerning the U.S. warranty & oil I can tell you the key is to stick with SAAB filters during the warranty period. If you have ANY lubrication problems with your car during warranty and you have a SAAB filter on it you will enjoy a no-questions-asked repair. Depending on the dealer, if you have an after-market filter on the car you may get some pushback. The factory filters only cost a buck or two more than your parts store variants and I would offer that as cheap peace of mind. I suspect if you buy a pack of 6 most dealers will give you a bit of a price cut.
Enjoy your car and good luck!
Cheers,
Icepick '01 Aero
