MArk:
I agree with bobc's comment - classic. Mine also did not through a code. Same crank but not fire situation and erratic behaviour with engine temp.
My car is also a V6 and I found it to be a bit of a DIY trial. I am unsure if bobc is just a better mechanic than me, or if he has a 4 cyl which might be an easier CPS fix.
The CPS is up behind the V6 turbo on the transmission side. From below, you must remove a small metal heat shield and the turbo support bracket to get at the CPS. It is retained by a small external Torx bolt off to one side. Once you get that out, the CPS can be withdrawn from the block. You'll have to follow the wiring from the CPS which runs under the throttle body to the rear of the engine where the connector lives.
My replacement CPS came with an o-ring seal in a little plastic ring that slid on the body of the sensor. That o-ring engages the recessed entry hole in the block. Mine leaked oil after it was installed even though I was very careful to clean the bore out perfectly. Later I took it out and found the plastic ring carrying the o-ring did not seal properly against the body of the CPS. I re-cleaned everything and lightly applied black oil resistant silicon seal around the CPS and the ring. That did the trick. No leaks since... 2 years I think.
Good Luck,
Reg
