Just a second please...just because you haven't heard of something doesn't lessen its validity...
Ask you favorite SAAB MASTER TECH about this....
I have just been living thru this issue this past week---which, like you, I had not previously head about on this BB, but the O-rings are real enough for me, and after installation the turbo really spools up much better.
(We even temporarily swapped out the MAF with a brand new part ---and in my case, there was no difference----my car needed the O-rings. ) YMMV.
There are 2 0-rings on the turbo inlet pipe, that IF you remove the turbo for say broken exhaust manifold studs, and/or a headgasket repair and/or just time and miles....they LEAK air...causing a lean condition, causing the pinging
Initially it can "appear" as if a DI or plugs are bad due to pinging....but TECH2 can GRAPHICALLY show you whether it is the O-rings, or MAF...it depends on shape of the graph, and the tech's abilities to read it.
This is one time where TECH2 diagnostics can be worth the $100 shop fee to an owner, as guessing wrong (by buying a MAF, or DI---when all you MAY POSSIBLY NEED is $6 worth of O-rings) can be big $$$$
