Sorry about your problem.
Before my '06 9-5 wagon I owned a 1.8T Passat wagon that I liked a lot, but at 170K+ miles it needed more work than it was worth. When I cross-shopped the Passat and the 9-5 they cost about the same in the USA when comparably equipped, which meant the V6 in the Passat in order to get niceties like full power seats and dual zone climate control. My B-5 (1998-2006) Passat, IMO was as good or better as a comparable 9-5, albeit without the luxury touches. The B-6 Passat is not built on the Audi A-4/6 platform as was mine, but rather is a stretched Golf/Jetta. I found it noisy, harsh riding, uncomfortable and not as good a car as my 2000 1.8 wagon.
