vanishing coolant and a funny smell

On top of the leaky shock I noticed (thread below), now the car seems to be leaking/burning coolant. The reservoir was low a few days back and I got the "fill coolant" notice on the SID. So I let the car cool down and it probably took 1/3 or so of a big Prestone bottle to top it off.
The car is also getting a strange smell while driving. It's coming from under the hood somewhere, but there's no smoke. This started the same time the coolant started disappearing.
I cannot see any leaking under the car, and there's nothing funny coming out the tailpipe. The engine sounds perfectly normal and the oil on the dipstick looks normal.
Thoughts? Part of me is thinking of drawing an oil sample for analysis, see if there's coolant in the oil. Any other thoughts before I take this thing to the shop? Thanks,
jeff
