Your last paragraph is interesting and slightly ironic for me. In the Old Days I (and a few other old dogs) was first attracted to Saabs and other European cars (such as the Beetle, the Volvo 544, 122S, and 144, the BMW 1800, 1600, and 2002) because they had qualities and style that Americans did NOT aspire to. When American cars were large and heavy the Europeans were smaller and athletic. When Americans wanted V8s Europeans offered efficient in-line 4's, flat 4's, in-line 6's and (you-know-who) turbocharged 4's, all with 4 speed transmissions! When American cars offered interiors styled like bordellos, Europeon cars were clean and airy with comfortable bucket seats and great looking dashboards with real gauges. And most of all, they HANDLED! The irony for me is that what you say is quite true - the market chases status and status is currently defined by the many of the "luxury" qualities I turned away from 40 years ago. We've come full circle, and I think you're right, sadly, that Saab has no choice but to keep up with the chase. If you're incapable of being revolutionary, then there is no sense being very different.
