Biggest unknown is always oil change history Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 17 Jan 2010 11:36:44 In Reply to: Newbie seeking 9-5 Advice, vandy-boy, Sun, 17 Jan 2010 08:07:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 2000 9-5 lpt has 265,000 miles and is still running strong. So the 147,000 miles on your prospective purchase may not be a concern. My engine has seen oil chages every 5,000 miles using only synthetic oil.
This O.C.I. proctice seems to be the magic elixir for the 9-5's 4-cylinder engine. This prevents the dreaded sludging of the engine with its accompanying oil pressure drop and oil starvation to major components. But the question remains, what type of oil change service did this car receive?
If there is documentation of low mileage oil changes with synthetic oil, go for it. If not, then ask that the sump be dropped to inspect for sludge and blockage of the oil pick-up screen.
The only other high-cost problem is fuel pump failure. Many owners D-I-Y this repair, replacing the pump only, for a couple hundred. Dealer repair is closer to $800 due to high cost of factory fuel pump and fuel sender combination module.
