I had the usual symptoms of CPS failure, including no hot start and stalling while driving. I got a new GM/Saab CPS from Eeuroparts with every intention of DIY. But it was 25 here in Long Island, I'm too old to crawl under cars, and I was still worried I might not have all the tools. I went to a local Mobil station which I know is slow on Saturday and they quoted me $90 for labor so I went for it. As soon as the car was in the air I realized this is a very easy, very simple job. The sensor itself is immediately and totally visible from under the car. It's also very easy to get to. Yes, you will need a flex joint for your socket, but this guy did the job with a 1/2" drive.
There's a small stamped bracket about 4 inches long which has to be unbolted first. This bracket weighs not more than 3 ounces, lest you be thinking of rear suspension sized things. The bracket is bolted with two E-torx bolts of modest size. I didn't ask the guy which E-torx size they were, but maybe they were E-8 or E-10. Once the bracket was off the single T30 torx bolt to remove the CPS was totally accessible. Trust me when I say I've had spark plug changes that were 10 times more difficult than this job. I didn't see where the cable connected to, but I know he literally crawled on top of the engine to find the connector. Finding an unplugging the cable looked more complicated than the actual CPS R&R.
I put 18 miles on the car and so far, so good. After about 500 miles I'll rest easy that the problem is totally solved. I won't single out Saab here for staggering complexity, because the complexity is mandated by Govt emissions controls requirements. But it remains the complexity of these cars is beyond belief, as I'm sure I'm the last to find out. The number of things that can and do go wrong is stupefying.
I'm going to do a "readiness monitor" drive cycle in the next few days hoping to get my car through inspection. What I wonder about is this. Where do I find 5 miles of road on which I can drive 55, then coast down to 20 without braking, as the readiness monitor requires to reset? The police state creeps up on us in strange and unexpected ways.
