I think Larry covered all the "expected" steps to programming a newer opener.
Perhaps you need extra.
I just picked up a 2004 9-3 Aero, and tried unsuccessfully to get the Homelink to recognize the remote.
Searching the 9-3SS board, some have found interference with some of the car's electronics. They have you turning off a couple of circuits (via fuse #10 and #26, IIRC).
They also found it necessary to have new batteries in the remote you're using to sync the mirror.
I haven't gotten back out to try Aero #2.
