The tech's comment about "Getting power directly from the fuse box" with Onstar systems worries me. The issue with installing the handsfree kit in a system that has Onstar is not the power line. You can get +12V, +12 V ignition switched , and ground from anywhere you like and there will be no issues.
With those wires you could get the handsfree kit to work with it's own mic and it's own speaker and no radio mute signal. (No Triad needed) Doing it this way will work, but I do not feel it is nearly as neat and slick as if you integrate the whole system.
What the Triad does is allow Onstar and your handsfree kit to share the mic and speaker inputs as well as the mute signal. This allows you to use the Saab mic as well as the radio speakers for your cell phone. It also will mute the radio when a call comes in. To do this with an Onstar enabled car and retain all Onstar features you must use a Triad. You could not use a Triad but you will not have a fully functional Onstar system.
