LEDs are the way to go. I put red ones in the heater switch and blue ones in the seat ventilation switch. Looks pretty cool. As landshark mentioned you do need to open the hole slightly. And they last forever.
Only negative on LEDs is that the light comes straight off the front, so side illumination is a lot less. Make sure you check out which way the light has to radiate.
