Today I went out to clean the negative battery post which had an enormous built-up of corrosion, spilling from under the battery cover onto the whole front fender.
What I didn't notice last time: around the negative post there was now a large pile of blue/green crystals, pointing to something like copper sulphite.
I took everything apart and cleaned the innards of the engine bay with a baking soda solution to prevent the acid eating into the paint and wiring. Rinsed with a low-pressure garden hose.
Note: the battery posts themselves were completely clean. After wiping off the acid dust it looked like new.
The negative clamp was a different story: whatever it was coated with has been totally eaten away, exposing a solid copper clamp. So instead of grey it is red now ;-)
After thorough cleaning I reattached using ample petroleum jelly.

The questions that remain: where does all the material come from? The battery is not leaking, it is vented towards the front of the car by a length of vacuum hose. Yes, the vent is right next to the negative post, but that shoudn't matter if the hose is well attached.
And then: how long is this going to last? Or is a replacement of the negative cable in order?
