PCV 6 doesn't apply to the V6 Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Tue, 4 May 2010 11:11:45 In Reply to: Everyone is always talking about PCV#6, JMSE, Sun, 2 May 2010 20:38:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
While the PCV system on the V6 still isn't the strongest on the planet, it never needed the extent of over-hauling the 2.3t's did. I had a 2001 V6 with 184k miles that burned a little oil but I always had vacuum at the dipstick and oil-fill openings and never any smoke coming out. The fact you have smoke coming OUT of the engine and an oil leak might point to pressurization of the crankcase. Either from a malfunctioning PCV or weak piston rings (but probably not). The first thing you should do is remove the "SAAB V6" cover and inspect the PCV check valve. The hose comes out of the throttle body, goes to the valve, then goes to the oil trap I mentioned. Take valve out and make sure you can BLOW through it (don't suck, there's oil in there and it tastes awful; yes I tried it) toward the throttle body, but NOT toward the engine. Run a pipe-cleaner through the nipple on the oil trap where the PCV hose plugs into also. Mine was caked in oil residue and wasn't letting air flow through.
The PCV check valve and where it plugs into the oil trap are circles in red. It's kind of a weird angle of the engine, it's taken from behind on the driver side. Use the oil cap for reference. Good luck!
