First, if you are truly concerned about sludge, never use anything but synthetic oil. I burned up a 2002 Saab 9-3 engine at about 30,000 miles by the dealer and myself using part-synthetic and dino oil that could not take the heat. Live and learn.
Secondly, the best oil by far, (tests prove it) that can take heat, to prevent sludge, is Amsoil. You can buy a case of it on the internet for about what Mobil 1 costs per quart. And you can review all the testing. Amsoil guarantees you will have no engine failures with their oil.
Second, I am really impressed with a product called Friktiontek. It is a product that you add to the oil but it is a nano-particled ceramic and not an oil additive per se. The nano-particle ceramic bonds with the engine's metal under friction and pressure and produces a ceramic/metal surface that is four times harder than metal and four times slicker than teflon. A treatment lasts for 60,000 miles. Friktiontek restored compression to an engine of mine that was toast due to excessive blow-by. It also boosts power and mileage and claims to double engine life. It will also do the same thing for turbos. Read all about it at Friktiontek.com. There are other products like it. A product called Cer-bond also seems to do the same thing for about the same price, but I like the service of the Friktiontek people better. (I have used both). I began using these nano-ceramics about six weeks ago and am now in the process of putting this nano-particled ceramic in all five of Saabs. I explain a lot more about my use of this product on my April 20, 2010 post on this forum. I have no financial interest in either of these products, but I am damned convinced the process works. It will substantially increase your power without doing any modification to your engine, so I would try one of these products before any of the things you mention. It is only about $75 to ceramicize your engine. Cheap.
Sludge is caused primarily due to heat to oils that can't take the heat. Put in the wrong oil and you will probably sludge any engine. Saabs, because of their turbos and cats really require an oil that can take excessive heat. Adding an oil that can take the heat is far more important than regular oil changes just to keep clean oil.
Seriously, don't sweat this if you use an oil that can take the heat. Amsoil will give you peace of mind. And I am sold that using the nano-ceramics will increase engine and turbo life.
