Many vehicles can have an odor problem even if their drains are not plugged. I suspect the 9-5s are in this group. The useage of the A/C varies a lot with climate and driver. Mold can grow on the evaporator whenever it it "put away wet" which can happen in many climates. Especially ECC vehicles that run the compressor whenever it is above freezing, needed or not. An "afterblow" module that runs the fan after a stop, to dry off the evap is sometimes installed. In Electronic Climate control equipped vehicles, that afterblow function can easily be designed in as an optional sofrware feature. You may want to check to see if the 9-5s have this, although I don't recall seeing it mentioned in the manual.
Other remedies can involve cleaning inside the HVAC case and hardware and treating with an anti-mold device. This requires a lot of service time and should be a last resort.
