A little back story: My 2001 Saab 9-5 SEV6 wagon with 120k on the clock has lived at the shop for the past few days. The original plan was get routine maintenance (timing belt, water pump, etc.) taken care of. Then the alternator died, just before the car was scheduled to go in. Of course the mechanic discovers the battery is bad, too, and won't hold a charge. Luckily it was still under full-replacement warranty.

The current issue: The mechanic took the car out for a test drive and all seemed well. Then he went to start the car again and got the "Key Not Accepted" message. After many attempts, the car still wouldn't start. He said he even tried the "Turn the key to On, press a button, then start the car" trick. Still no start. The car would crank, but the fuel pump wouldn't kick in - the immobilizer was keeping the car from starting. Ultimately, he was able to put the car into "Transport" mode so we could still drive it. Although the trunk won't lock and the key fob won't lock/unlock the doors.

He thinks the TWICE unit has gone bad. I've had the "Key Not Accepted" warning many, many times, but the button trick always works, if not just a simple flip the key around or open and close the door. Is it common for these modules to fail? ... and around this mileage? How can one confirm the TWICE has died? My mechanic is starting to source a used module with a warranty. I'd hate to shell out even more big bucks if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance.
