I long ago gave up on most American automobile magazines such as Road & Track, Car & Driver, Automobile, etc. after concluding that most of the road tests read like factory sales brochures and the general level of the writing had dropped off terribly. For the last couple of years my favorite read has been EVO out of the UK because of their serious, intelligent criticism and the overall enthusiasm they have for "the thrill of driving"(their slogan). They have not been kind to Saab during that time (no surprise) but in their August issue they carried a brief review of the new 9-5 in their "Driven" column which is where they briefly discuss new releases. These folks do not hand out praise freely and never undeservedly, so it really got me exited that they really liked the car! I don't want to take up space by summarizing the entire column, but I'll quote the last paragraph written by their writer John Simister: "I'd have one over a 5-series or an A6, no question. Objectively it's as good, in some ways better. Subjectively, it's about 200 per cent more interesting. Relief at Trollhattan, then". Amen to that last remark.
