Steering spline lubed = NEW CAR!! Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Sun, 15 Aug 2010 09:58:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Holy. Crap.
I have been driving this car for a good 6k miles with the steering wheel thunking and clunking anytime I stop, go, or it shifts. It has been driving me batsh*t crazy.
I knew a guy with a 1999 9-5, and his steering wheel would make a rapid clicking sound as it was turned, which mine never did. I was under the impression the "spline lube" everyone talks about was to fix THAT. I was wrong. There are two universal joints AND a sliding spline shaft in the steering column. The rapid clicking is a U-joint issue, but the clunking is a spline shaft issue.
This spline shaft is there so the column can move in and out, telescoping over itself to remove any drivetrain movement from the steering wheel. Well, if it's not lubed enough, it can't slide, and the drivetrain slop gets up to the wheel and you feel it. A LOT. It's the kind of thing that if you bring it to a mechanic and try to explain, he would write you off as a crazy person. But when you drive the car every day... it's very much there!
Anyway, I can't link to it here, but I followed a DIY guide on another forum with the word "Central" in it. I'm pretty sure the author is another TSN regular too, so if you're reading this, THANK YOU!!! I used some white lithium grease and my car feels like new!
