John, I have the hoist, jacks and air tools. But I am solo in the garage except for the bride to hold the brake pedal. Trolling eBay I am amazed to find that the '99 4 cyl will match the '00 V-6. Seems there would be a power disparity. Previous comments noted, but the availability of 4 cylinders is much greater. Think I should "take the chance"? Also; really suprised to see these transmissions were made in Japan! I'll begin the removal tomorrow. At my pace I expect a two week job. This is my 23rd SAAB (chuckles) and the Lord is with me. Seems to have been a failure with the torque converter. Shifting was just fine until it "puked" red between engine and transmission. Plus, that was the area from which the noise eminatted. Sounded more like a starter clashing with the ring gear. Sometime it would not catch. Open and inspect;- no alternative. Thanks, PFB (Jeff Levi Charleston SC).
