Serpentine Belt = Very "doable." Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 21:06:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So right as I am coming up on 60k miles and starting to worry about replacing my serpentine belt, my friend (who pops on here every once in a while as bcharliek) had his 9-5 shred its belt. The upper idler pulley grenaded. So I got a nice little practice run with him tonight!
It was NOT a difficult job at all. I was very pleasantly surprised. I did end up going out and buying a jack and stands at Sears. Stupidly, I got a low-profile jack, which is great for squeezing under Aero (and Gary Fisher) body kits, but the jack's highest position is still lower than the stands' lowest position! D'oh!
The biggest PITA was getting the center idler pulley bolted in, which was not as bad as I thought it would be. As was suggested, we ended up taping the bolt in the pulley, getting it in place, and then turning the pulley with the bolt taped in place to start it threading. Once we got enough tape on there it worked the first try! The belt went on without too much trouble (use the diagram in the owner's manual) and the tensioner was super easy to set!
I'm looking forward to doing mine this weekend now. I'll try to take step-by-step pictures and make a little DIY to add to my collection. Aah, I love these cars. :)
