Manual Transmission Drain

I am trying to flush my 2002 manual transmission this week but I am having trouble getting to the drain plug behind the sub-frame. Last time I did this I ended up lowering the sub-frame a few inches to get a socket in there. Is there an easier way to do this? If I shortened an allen wrench would it do the job? I'm not sure why this plug was put in such close quarters.
