1999-2009 [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I knew a few years ago that I had some minor oil leaks, but they never gave me a problem. Then, back in September, my 1999 9-5 wagon started "asking" for oil 2-3 times per week all of a sudden as the oil light kept coming on. My mechanic said that I should just carry a lot of oil on me since it wasn't worth the repair and to pull over and put more in whenever needed. My personal economy being what it is, I was in no rush to replace the car.
Two weeks before Thanksgiving, she all of a sudden began billowing white/bluish smoke that blocked out the entire highway, then went into limp home mode. I had it towed. My usual mechanic said that the repair wasn't worth it, but a new car wasn't in the cards. Upon the tow truck guy's recommendation, I had the car towed to a trained Saab specialist. At least that's what he said. He said that I flooded the engine with oil, but my question was, "What was I supposed to do? See the oil light come on and keep driving until the engine seized up?"
He replaced the turbo and the manifold. Cost $2,000. Still cheaper than even a used car. Here I am about 2 weeks later, driving up the highway, and the oil light begins to flicker on. So I pull over and just put in what might be 1/2 a quart of oil - worried to death I will flood the engine again. I go up the road 2-3 miles and the oil light comes on again. I take my chances and put in more oil. A bit more this time. The car then does fine enough to drop my mom off home and continue to my place. So I got home fine with no further problems, but I'm certainly not planning any risky, daredevil trips to the local supermarket.
Can anyone give me their take on what they think the problem is? And yes, I fear that, because I was in a compromised position, in a place where you HAVE TO HAVE A CAR (NJ), I've been suckered and victimized. I have my receipts and there's a one year warranty on parts and labor, but I am getting the feeling that the mechanic will come up with the idea that it is something "completely different now".
So please. Any thoughts???
