I have no false allegiance to Magnaflow, my inclusion of their name was simply to alert readers that my car does not have a factory Cat anymore. You did answer another of my questions which was "Do aftermarket Cats have a significanlty shorter life expectancy than factory Cats?"
I'll continue to monitor the frequency of the CEL, have the local Saab Indy run a check of the MAF, replace the MAF if bad or questionable, and return to driving like a banshee when the weather warms in Spring. :^)
Both CELs came while driving very carefully in cold weather on slippery winter roads. Both times the fuel gage was reading 1/4 tank or lower. Since the WIS identifies fuel additives as a potential cause of this problem I may have some "stuff" concentrated in the bottom of the fuel tank that contributes to the alarms. Or it may be the combination you discribed of a well aged, less stout, Cat in a cautiously driven vehicle.
Maybe I should take my wife's advise and sell this car. $250 for a MAF (apparently very past due), and maybe another $300 to have a new Cat welded into the downpipe, in a car with a ~$1500 market value. Sigh.....
