For those who missed this possible solution on an old thread:
OK. I'm back to report an update. My emblems have been practically bare now for probably at least a year. It seems that it just takes one solid cold snap to have the emblem chip or slide right off the backing. I even found the majority of the image on the ground next to the car. Not where I would like it to be. So while the clear coat did perhaps extend the life of the emblem past it's 1 year only life span, that normally doesn't cut through a good winter, it is not a final solution.
But I discovered something new. There's a guy on Ebay that sells decals in various colors, designs, and sizes for Saab. I don't know if he does it for other makes. But these are no ordinary Saab decals. These decals are high quality decals that Saab should've placed on their cars in the first place. Understand that these emblems do not replace the Saab emblem in it's entirety. It is to be adhered over the emblem backing plate. They are better looking than in the pictures. I ordered the Saab Scania ones for both the front and the back of the car. These emblems have a clear, raised dome over them. So, unless that dome frees itself, the logo is going nowhere. Unlike in the photo, the white area isn't white, it is silver. So, again, the photo doesn't do it justice, as it looks darn good. The dome, to me, adds a 3D quality element to it. Again, something I would've expected as pride in their brand from Saab originally.
I would'nt be genuine in my review if I didn't include other issues though. But, so far, they are minor in relation to the quality he provides. First, the color of the blue and red on the Saab Scania emblems isn't on target, but no one's going to notice that and it is still a far cry from a bare silver disc on the front and back of your car, no matter how much you tell yourself you're going to get used to it. Second, I have absolutely no idea as to how good the adhesive is, so I don't know how long it will stay on. I just put these on last week and we've just been hit by a blizzard that dropped 2 feet of snow. So the emblems have been under snow for the last 2 days, but again, that's a super short period of time. It was bonus to clear the snow off of them today though and see them glistening in the sun, making my 1999 Saab wagon look Prince was singing about her in his song about partying in 1999! Oh yeah.
The price of each emblem was $10, which at first seemed pricey , but I said, "Heck, it's for my car." He sells cheaper ones without domes. He also sells them for wheels and I believe makes custom sizes, also. As I said, they are available in different colors and styles, too.
Finally, the Ebay name of this guy is "focuslima" and I believe he's in Portugal.
I will try to report in another year to let you know how mine are doing.
