See the Battery FAQ linked below. There are many battery brands, but a lot fewer battery manufacturers out there.
I use the Duralast from Autozone (one of the side effects from watching too many NASCAR races...), and they've been great. They always seem to have the Group 48 in stock, and no worries about swapping it.
The stock size is a Group 91, but a Group 48 is a LOT more common, and fits just fine in the tray, under the hood, and under the battery cozy (a.k.a. cover, if your car still has that...).
What this whole "Code XX" deal is, I've no idea, and a few web searches turned up nothing. Probably just another way to get the consumer further away from useful information, and to make it easier for a retailer.
There are also other codes out there, including a DIN code. For example the BCI Group size for an NG900/OG9-3 battery is 47, but the DIN designation is "H5".
In most cases, the battery "book" that your retailer uses will be a good place to start.
