I've got a '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a '01 9-5 Sportwagon. I never knew how much of a chore to drive the Jeep was until shortly after buying the Saab. Every other weekend I make a 3 hour drive to the coast, mostly on an interstate highway (posted 70mph speed). It is a fairly busy interstate.
Fully aware of rollover potential in high center of gravity SUV's, I don't make the moves in the Jeep like I would need to sometimes to keep from getting stuck in the right hand lane. There is much more wind and tire noise from the Jeep, and acceleration comes with a good bit of engine noise. And a strong crosswind can really have an effect on such a vehicle with such a big side profile.
The Saab is an absolute dream. Quiet, responsive, and incredible acceleration in the 60-75 range. I used to have to stop to take a break in the Jeep, but I can drive the Saab straight through and not arrive tired. And I can carry about the same amount of stuff in either. Saab gas mileage is better to boot. I will give the advantage to the Jeep for visibility in bad weather...the extra height puts you above most of the water/mist that other cars kick up so I can see better.
I will likely always keep a truck or SUV because I need a tow vehicle. But when it comes to picking a ride for the weekend getaways the Jeep is sitting in the garage.
