We had almost the same experience in March. Our car (2001 9-5 wagon)was three months old. My wife was stopped at a red light when a truck (whose driver was not paying attention) smashed in to her at about 25mph. The impact pushed our wagon in to the SUV in front of us. The insurance paid for our car to be repaired (at a repair shop of our choice – we took it to a local place who just handles European luxury cars). This came to about $8,000 (rear bumper skin, front bumper, grill, hood one quarter panel, both lights and wiper assemblies). They also paid for a rental car (“comparable” car) for the 30 days ours was in the body shop.
Here in Texas a car has to suffer something like 70% of its value for it to be totaled. We were able to get $3,500 in diminished value. Not enough to cover the loss, but at least it was something. We took it to three local dealers (Saab, BMW, and Mercedes) to find out what we lost in trade-in because of the wreck. They all estimated between $5,000-$6,000 loss in value.
Not a good situation financially, but just be happy your were in a Saab and not something else or the loss could have been more than just financial.
